描述.Input/Output in Parallel and Distributed Computer Systems.has attracted increasing attention over the last few years, as it hasbecome apparent that input/output performance, rather than CPUperformance, may be the key limiting factor in the performance offuture systems. This I/O bottleneck is caused by the increasing speedmismatch between processing units and storage devices, the use ofmultiple processors operating simultaneously in parallel anddistributed systems, and by the increasing I/O demands of new classesof applications, like multimedia. It is also important to note that,to varying degrees, the I/O bottleneck exists at multiple levels ofthe memory hierarchy. All indications are that the I/O bottleneck willbe with us for some time to come, and is likely to increase inimportance. ..Input/Output in Parallel and Distributed Computer Systems. isbased on papers presented at the 1994 and 1995 IOPADS workshops heldin conjunction with the International Parallel Processing Symposium.This book is divided into three parts. Introduction to Multiprocessor I/O Architectures and provide pointers to interesting research in the literature, we do not attempt to provide a comprehensive survey. We concentrate on a study of the architectural design issues, and the effects of different design alternatives.

Heterogeneous I/O Contention in a Single-Bus Multiprocessordeo, network, and disk devices, as opposed to systems with multiple devices of the same type, such as multiple disks, which we will call homogeneous. We use a correlation analysis to characterize the contention and then quantify the loss in performance by approximating the overhead time of contention using actual trace data.
