The antigenic properties of bacterial DNA in normal and aberrant immunity, ese autoantibodies bind sites on both single-stranded (ss) and double-stranded DNA (ds) and are part of a diverse group of autoantibodies directed to nuclear antigens (antinuclear antibodies or ANA) [28, 44].

Mechanisms of immune stimulation by bacterial DNA, result from short sequence motifs, termed CpG motifs or immunostimulatory sequences (ISSs), that occur much more commonly in bacterial than mammalian DNA. Since these sequences can activate the innate immune system, bacterial DNA may serve as a “danger signal” to stimulate host defense during infection [25].

The response of human B lymphocytes to oligodeoxynucleotides, ructures, including denatured DNA, Z-DNA, A-DNA, and triple helical DNA [1], it was difficult to induce antibody by immunization with native right-handed helical DNA. Therefore, DNA was generally considered to be poorly immunostimulatory.

Book 2001the potential application of immunostimulatory DNA. ISS hold great promise for influencing the immune response and the authors anticipate that the high efficacy and low toxicity observed in animal models will translate into success in a variety of human clinical applications.
