Morphometric and Edaphic Factors Affecting Pond Designorphometry, soils, and sediment to aid in pond design, construction, and management. Details of engineering design and construction of aquaculture ponds are discussed in Chapter 13. Attention to these guidelines will help ensure that ponds will be easy to maintain and manage.

Introduction rapidly expanding in many places (Rosenberry 1990). For example, between 1980 and 1989 the area devoted to shrimp ponds increased in Thailand from 64,000 to 198,000 acres, in China from 23,000 to 358,000 acres, and in Ecuador from 46,000 to 250,000 acres.

Pond Design and Constructionigging a pit in which water is stored. Excavated ponds are filled by runoff, well water, or ground-water seepage. Pond construction is a broad subject. Construction techniques used for a particular pond depend on site characteristics, available equipment and material, cost, and preference.

CEB) and asked him to teach a new course on water supply for aqua culture. They felt that information on climatology, hydrology, water distribution systems, pumps, and wells would be valuable to them. Most of these students were planning to work in commercial aquaculture in the United States or abr

Runoffhed soil, and ground water seeping into streams. For large watersheds or drainage basins, runoff can be computed directly from stream discharge. However, for watersheds too small to support streams or for ungauged watersheds or basins, runoff must be estimated.

Physical Properties of Water and Water Cyclethe hydrologic or water cycle and some comments on the distribution of water are given. Water is the medium for aquaculture, and we feel that those involved in aquaculture should have a good conception of the hydrosphere. Some readers may be familiar with this material and prefer to go directly to Chapter 2.

Water Requirements for Aquacultural Pondsed ponds usually are supplied by runoff; some depend entirely on overland flow, and others also receive inflow of intermittent or permanent streams. Pond design and construction is discussed in Chapter 13.

Open-Channel Flowslow is elevational energy (gravity); gravity drives water in a channel from higher to lower elevations. This chapter discusses principles of open-channel flow and hydraulics; the design of unlined, lined, and vegetated channels are presented with some examples.
