Evolution that the mind is a faculty or organ just like our lungs or our limbs. Assuming this, the question we ask is: what role does having a mind play in the adaptation of an organism to its physical world? Why is it necessary to have a mind in order to adapt? Any organ or faculty a species evolves consumes metabolic resources, so why have a mind at all?

Narrativee and predictable adults who can autonomously fulfill behavioral expectations at all kinds of mentally abstract levels, not requiring concrete rewards and punishments. Not only do we need to predict others and society, but society and others need to predict us. By becoming our own monitors we reduce the need for society to monitor us directly.

Young people, who had been reasoning in terms of maintaining the social order and taking the point of view of rules and roles, were regressing back to reasoning from self-interest and instrumental exchange. Many of these young people were on the campus of Berkeley in the 1960s.
