The Immigrant Human Capital Investment Modelability have less of an incentive to invest in new U.S.-specific human capital. Thus, the IHCI model suggests an inverse relationship between entry earnings and earnings growth and implies that entry earnings cannot measure an immigrant’s level of source-country human capital.

Family Incometries are more likely to work and contribute a higher fraction of family income than do married women from Western Europe. As with West European immigrants, Japanese men have high initial earnings upon arrival and their wives have low rates of labor market participation.

Husbands and Wives: Work Decisions in a Family Investment Model? earnings (Filipinos, Koreans, and Chinese, followed by Indians) have the highest unexplained labor force participation of married women. The groups with the smallest expected growth in men’s earnings (Japanese and the benchmark group of Europeans and Canadians) have the lowest female participation rates.

Following Cohorts and Individuals Over Time: Work Decisions of Married Immigrant Womenanalyses show that the relatively high propensity to work of Asian immigrant women does not decrease with time in the U.S. The strong positive correlation between the adjusted earnings gap for men and the propensity to work of immigrant women helps offset the low initial earnings of immigrant men from Asian developing countries.
