The Utrecht Ophthalmic Hospital and the development of the ophthalmoscopeThe first useful table model ophthalmoscope was designed by Donders and the instrumentmaker Epkens. With the use of this instrument Donders’ pupil Van Trigt made the first drawings of the normal and pathological fundus of the eye. His contribution was of great importance for the early diffusion of knowledge of the fundus of the eye.

No one still alive can remember this very odd and spectacular academic event far up north in Europe. If the circumstances had been different nothing would have been mentioned, and a rather conventional academic fight would have passed unnoticed.

Eye votives in Greek antiquity a man is standing in the foreground, greeting the god with his raised hand. We do not know, if this is the gesture of salutation, or if it is the gesture of a votant appealing in pain and sorrow to the god of medical art who is still sitting in the boat.

“Eye Injuries” by the Byzantine writer Aetios Amidinosogos”, including Eye Diseases. In all his writings, there is a substantial resort to ancient medical literature, mainly to the books of Galen. He describes the Eye Injuries in 5 chapters with remarkable critical ability and suitable treatment..Thus he is acknowledged as one of the most cultured and productive writers of that period.
