描述This volume contains the greater part of the papers submitted to the High Energy Physics portion of the 1983 Orbis Scientiae, then dedicated to the eightieth year of Professor P. A. M. Dirac. Before the vol,ume could be published, Professor Dirac passed away on October 20, 1984, thereby changing the dedication of this volume, and its companion, on Information Processing in Biology, to his everlasting memory. Since 1969, Professor Dirac had given the opening address at each of these conferences. He was unable to prepare a manuscript of his last paper in 1983. His impact on science already has been enormous. The consequences of his thought and work for future developments are incalculable. Regrettably, Professor Dirac‘s last appearance at this series of conferences, begun in 1964 as the Coral Gables Conference on Symmetry Principles at High Energy, coincided with the twentieth, and the last of these. The work and expense involved in organizing them and preparing the proceedings have corne to far exceed the physical capabilities and the support received by the Center for Theoretical Studies for this program. Some Remarks on Performance of Very High Energy Colliders,We have heard from R. R. Wilson of the exciting possibility of a huge “desert machine” with 20 TeV protons and antiprotons, and N. Samios has stressed that high luminosity is desirable, especially at very high energies.

,On the Measurement of αs,We point out that a number of QCD tests, relatively free of obvious nonperturbative corrections and other theoretical problems, are now available in e.e. annihilation. By focusing on these tests, one can see the beginning of a confirmation of the running of the strong coupling constant predicted by the renormalization group.

,A Search for Proton Decay into e+π° Irvine-Michigan-Brookhaven Collaboration,the decay p → e.π° were found in a fiducial mass of 3300 metric tons. We conclude that the limit on the lifetime for bound plus free protons divided by the e.π° branching ratio is τ/B > 1.9 × 10. yr. (90% confidence). Observed cosmic ray muons and neutrinos are compatible with expectations.

B-L Violating Supersymmetric Couplings, remark that even the minimal supersymmetric SU. theory contains B-L violating couplings which give rise to neutrino masses and family-diagonal proton decay. However, the strength of these couplings is limited by the gauge hierarchy.
