On Cray-class computers, very high efficiencies are possible when vectorization is combined with parallel processing. It is shown that while this leads to near optimum performance, it is achieved at the expense of increased memory requirements.

Data Parallelism in Java or HPF, on both a shared-memory parallel machine (IBM SPI2) and a distributed-memory parallel machine (SGI Origin 2000). Furthermore, better compiler technology is on the horizon, which will further narrow the performance gap.

The performance of the age-threshold algorithm depends on a good choice of an age-threshold; therefore, we suggest methods for choosing a good age-threshold.
