man shows increasing heat production as environmental temperatures fall (Figure 8.1), needing twice as much energy to maintain a constant core temperature of 37°C at 10°C as at 20°C. Heat production may be by muscular thermogenesis (mainly shivering) or by non-muscular/non-shivering thermogenesis (NST), principally by the liver.
