Surgical treatment of hemifacial spasm by microvascular decompression: a forty-patient series studyh particular attention to the presence of small meningiomas or schwannomas provoking the hemifacial spasm. The nature of arterial or venous neurovascular contact is discussed and the results of long-term follow-ups are presented.

Electrophysiological investigations of peripheral and central changes in hemifacial spasm,ure as well as the authors personal findings, as reported in the third section, favour the central or ‘nucleus’ hypothesis, which seems actually the most probable to explain as a whole the clinical and electrophysiological characteristics of HFS.

Hemifacial spasm: treatment with botulinum toxin (a report of 50 patients),weakness (5.2%) or excessive lower facial weakness (5.6%), ptosis (4.3%), tearing (3.5%), and dry eye (1.7%). Any systemic effects were registered. Some questions related to botulinum toxin treatment are addressed.
