Peers and Play in Infants and Toddlers are identifiable and relatively stable individual differences in the affect, skill, and motivation to play with age-mates. These competencies set the stage for much of subsequent socioemotional and cognitive development (Hartup, 1983).

Peer Relations in Early and Middle Childhoodally understood by children to be structured horizontally rather than vertically. The egalitarian nature of the social exchanges that occur between children and other children distinguish them clearly from the exchanges that occur between children and adults (Furman & Buhmester, 1985; Youniss, 1980).

A Humanistic Approach to Lifespan Developmentwho study human development to incorporate into our work postmodern humanistic psychology’s perspectives and qualitative methods. In that way we can self-consciously choose the influence that our academic conceptions may have on human development. Perhaps we can also encourage positive societal and personal growth.

Attachment and Bondingorenz, 1957; Tinbergen, 1951) and mammals, especially nonhuman primates (e.g., DeVore, 1965), provided novel ways of thinking about and of studying the human infant’s attachment to parents, as well as human parents’ attachment to their infants.
