Introduction,This chapter provides basic definitions of seizure and epilepsy, reviews epidemiological data pertaining to childhood epilepsy, and briefly describes some of the features of the developing brain that make children more susceptible to seizures.

Etiology,There are numerous causes of childhood epilepsy, both genetic and acquired. The ILAE has organized the causes of epilepsy into categories of genetic, structural-genetic, structural-acquired, mixed, and unknown. This chapter covers these categories with examples pertinent to pediatric epilepsy.

Childhood Epilepsy Syndromes,There are several pediatric epilepsy syndromes that are defined by age of onset, seizure type, EEG changes, and prognosis. This chapter breaks syndromes down by age of onset and includes epilepsy syndromes with onset in the neonatal period, infancy, childhood, and adolescence.

Non-epileptic Paroxysmal Events,This chapter reviews paroxysmal disorders in childhood that appear similar to seizures but are not epileptic. Most of the symptoms discussed below are benign and self-limited. Paroxysmal events are arranged by their most common age of onset and include parasomnias, benign movement disorders, and psychiatric symptoms.

e questions used in the Bloomsbury MRCP Part 1 course and supplements the previously published volume: .Johnson/Pozniak, MRCP Part 1.. Any candidate preparing for such examinations will find valuable guidelines as to the strengths and weaknesses of his knowledge.
