Overview of Composite Materials,ver, are the synthetic, man-made materials, possessing high strength and/or stiffness relative to weight which are used in high performance structural applications because of these properties. Figure 1.1 shows the strength- and stiffness-to-weight relationships for several fibers when arrayed in unidirectional laminates.

Carbon-Carbon Composites,eir multiformity, their mechanical properties can be readily tailored (Table 15.1). Carbon materials have high strength and stiffness potential as well as high thermal and chemical stability in inert environments. These materials must, however, be protected with coatings and/or surface sealants when used in an oxidizing environment.
