Politicians, seismologists and engineers will have to work hard to predict as accurately as possible what will happen at a given site during a future earthquake, even if we don‘t know when it will happen. At the same time, seismology is becoming an indispensable part of space research.

The delay was largely due to the lack of objective quantitative data necessary to understand earthquakes sooner. It is therefore not surprising that people held naive and often bizarre views about earthquakes.

Yoshifumi Ishii,Giora M. Mavligitisco. Earthquakes were essentially viewed as annoying and inconvenient, but not dangerous. This was until the Great California Earthquake on 18 April 1906 on the San Andreas Fault, just a few kilometres from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The earthquake changed the understanding of earthquakes and the attitude to seismic hazard.
