This chapter attends to loves of this sort, with the attention in question shaped by personal reflection and philosophical sensibilities which are recognizably Wittgensteinian and concerned with matters that run deep within human lives.

Czech Women Philosophers and Scientistsl’s point in that it elaborates on the moral aspects of such a life strategy. Lily’s moral struggle ends with a profound transformation in which she accepts love, thereby accepting her more genuine moral self. I thus interpret Wittgenstein’s “Try to be loved & not-admired” as a moral warning.

On the Emergence of Czechoslovakiay. The basic phenomenon is not words meaning this and that but people meaning this and that, and meaning it to one another. For what is hard is not to utter certain words or sentences, but to utter them meaning what you are saying, and understanding what someone is saying is then not a fundamentally different thing from understanding her.

Ethical Inquiries After Wittgenstein: Introduction, of relativism and objectivism/universalism; an emphasis on the personal in ethics; and a concern for moral “seriousness”. We indicate how contributions in the book embody these emphases, but also where they offer further developments and re-interpretations, especially on issues regarding conceptual and moral change.

Animal Investigations it is very different from meaning as we know it from human language. Wittgensteinian concepts applied to animal life allow us to go beyond the objection of anthropomorphism. They represent fruitful heuristic tools for ethology and analytic tools for a philosophy of animal life.
