描述The papers in this volume were presented at a symposium/workshop on "The Estimation and Analysis of Insect Populations" that was held at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, in January, 1988. The meeting was organized with financial support from the United States - New Zealand Cooperative Science Program and the University of Wyoming. The purpose was to bring together approximately equal numbers of quantitative biologists and biometricians in order to (1) provide a synthesis and evaluation of currently available methods for modeling and estimating parameters of insect population, and to (2) stimulate research into new methods where this is appropriate. The symposium/workshop attracted 46 participants. There were 35 papers presented in four subject areas: analysis of stage-frequency data, modeling of population dynamiCS, analysis of spatial data, and general sampling and estimation methods. New results were presented in all these areas. All except one of the papers is included in the present volume.

Life Tables and Parasitism: Estimating Parameters in Joint Host-Parasitoid Systemsost cases directly from stage-frequency data or samples of percentage parasitism, particularly when recruitment or parasitism overlaps with advancement to the next developmental stage..We present two approaches for calculating losses from parasitism. The first incorporates direct estimates for recru

From Cohort Data to Life Table Parameters Via Stochastic Modelingnce of the stages over time in one cohort of individuals. This method involves modeling of the development process, modeling of the sampling process with its inherent errors, a statistical approach based on the models, and a numerical algorithm designed to perform the statistical estimation on real

Estimation of Stage—Specific Demographic Parameters for Zooplankton Populations: Methods Based on St approach demographic estimation as an inverse problem, using stage-classified matrix projection models. We allow the vital rates to vary between stages and over time, and do not assume stable age distributions or that discrete cohorts can be identified. We obtain least-squares estimates of survival

Compartmental Models in the Analysis of Populationsthus form a basis for the analysis of stage-frequency data. A review of the theory of compartmental systems is given. Both deterministic and stochastic theory are covered with mention of phase-type compartmental residence time distributions (covering exponential, gamma and mixtures of gamma), and in

Nonparametric Estimation of Insect Stage Transition Timese of samples in time. At each sample time, sacrifice a subset of a cohort and record the number of insects in each stage. We review nonparametric point estimators of the time to each stage and evaluate the estimators by computer simulation. The simulation results, under five survival distributions,
