Computerized tomography,ow and crude by modern standards and could only be used for scanning heads. The system was able to differentiate more efficiently than conventional radiography between areas in the head with differing X-ray attenuation coefficients, these areas being displayed as shades of grey-scale on a television monitor.

Contrast is determined partly by the extent to which primary radiation penetrates the various body structures and partly by the effects of scatter.
