Mammary tumor fibroblasts are phenotypically distinct from non-tumor fibroblasts,ole for interaction between the tumor epithelium and stroma in the development and progression of breast cancer. This chapter focuses on the fibroblast component of mammary tumors: the signals they produce and their potential influence on the growth of the tumor itself.

Tai,Cheng-Jang Wuevelopment, epithelial-mesenchymal transitions take place in a temporally and spatially controlled manner, whereas in tumors these changes are highly uncontrolled. Loss of epithelial character is typically observed late in progression of human carcinomas, and correlates there with the acquisition of invasive and metastatic potential.
