The Problem of Value in Scientific Explanation indicating some of the other questions with which it is entangled. Specifically, I want to show that the problem of affect is not just a phenomenological issue or a variant of the so-called “hard problem” of consciousness: it is also deeply implicated in the widespread use of value concepts in psychology and neuroscience.

to feel deeply impacted in a way that is not affective. These observations suggest that our feeling self is, in the words of William James, “that to which pleasure and pain speak.” Perhaps we can also say that if not for affect we would have no sense of self. For is it not affect that makes our experience seem to belong uniquely to us?
