The 21st Century Emergence of the Multi-Disciplinary Problem Solving Environmentunit costs have plummeted. The companion software evolution is now accelerating, to emerge as a collaborative multi-disciplinary problem solving environment (mPSE) on the World Wide Web. This contribution highlights aspects of this exciting development.

VECFEM-Solver for Non-Linear Partial Differential Equationsser interface xvem, the code generator, and the kernel library. This system can be combined with other external software tools such as I-DEAS for the definition of the domain and AVS for the analysis of the results. The kernel library can be used independently, eg. in simulation codes or within other PSEs.

WBCSim: A Prototype PSE for Wood-Based Composites Simulationsool. WBCSim serves as a prototype for the design, construction, and evaluation of larger scale problem solving environments. Several different wood-based composite material simulations are supported. A detailed description of the prototype’s software architecture and a typical scenario of use are presented.

https://doi.org/10.1007/978-981-13-3408-5 and standard language are missing for other scientific application areas where libraries and PSEs are embryonic. These complex application areas require high performance computing power and the PSE design and library structure must be scalable in the complexity of the applications.
