The Foundation of Ethical Metaphysics,tional relationships with others which Levinas designates as totality. The totality is the whole into which the observable lives of individuals are incorporated. It devours individuality and fails to recognize genuine alterity and the meaning of inner life.

Early Themes,e. The totality in its turn is a vastly ramified extension of self. Man has sown his dragon’s teeth. How can he break the circuit of the self, or to put the question in Levinas’ terms, how can he find the meaning of the other?
