描述This book examines the relationship between law and scientific advancement, with a particular focus on the theory of evolution and medical innovation. Historically, the law has struggled to keep pace with modern medical advances. The authors demonstrate that the laws that govern human behaviour must evolve in response to such advances. This book describes how evolution shapes us humans and allows us to understand processes from ageing to decision making, and examines recent medical developments related to reproduction, neurosciences, sexuality, illness, bodily autonomy, and death, while considering the ethical, philosophical and legal implications of those developments.

What we are looking for in a definition depends on the context of the question, and it is therefore appropriate to regard someone as dead for some purposes but not others. This chapter highlights how debates over the definition of death

Monumentality in Later PrehistoryThis chapter explains the biology of sex determination and how science seeks to categorise sex. It also examines the legal definition of sex and questions the law’s assumption that there are only two sexes. In particular it considers the legal response to intersex people.

Brain,This chapter examines the increasing, albeit still limited, understanding of the brain and how it functions. It explores ways of enhancing the operation of the brain and the impact of injuries to the brain. The chapter considers how these impact on the legal understandings of responsibility for behaviour and the concept of the self.
