A key observation that motivated the current project is introduced—i.e., that there is a deep conceptual co-determinacy between how we understand mental disorders and how we understand human functioning in general. The chapter structure of the book is then summarized.

Current Conceptual Models of Mental Disorder,normative questions (i.e., on what basis can we label someone’s thinking and behavior as dysfunctional or disordered). It is shown that all perspectives reviewed have different strengths, but that each has clear weaknesses.
