Electrons in Low-Dimensional Structures,tal the discreteness of the energy levels cannot be resolved because the energy separation between the levels is too small. However, in semiconductor heterostructures the electrons can be easily confined to very small spatial regions, where the quantization of their energy spectrum plays a crucial role.
