Evaluation of Cofactor Responsivenessest new approaches. Partially tested proposals are made here for a traversed distance indicator, a straight path guidance device, and a moving hazard indicator. The approaches can result in potentially practical devices, and they can also provide instructive new concepts in their analysis.

Historical Overviewwell as rehabilitation. The general problem and tentative lines of solution have been studied since the beginning of the century: an electronic spatial sensor was developed by 1897 (14) and technology for both a spatial sensor and a reading machine was developed by Fournier d’Albe between 1912 and 1920 (10,22).

William Jennings,Stefan PfänderResearchers from many disciplines, both basic and applied, are concerned with the issues raised by electronic spatial sensing. Foremost are those, generally engineers, who have designed the actual devices used as spatial sensors. This section will deal primarily with the technology of such sensors.

https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4899-1931-1I will briefly summarize the results of some 20 years of research at the Smith-Kettlewell Institute of Visual Sciences which I have directed toward the development of mobility aids for the blind. I will attempt to point out what we can learn from these investigations that may prove valuable in directing the thrust of future developments.
