描述In recent decades eicosanoids have been attracting anincreasing amount of attention as a result of their importantphysiological roles in many areas of biology and medicine. Theeicosanoids comprise the prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienesand are products of arachidonic acid, an essential polyunsaturatedfatty acid stored in tissue phospholipids. Disturbances of eicosanoidsand their metabolic products play a regulatory role in many types ofcell injuries and diseases. One of the most exciting areas ofeicosanoid research pinpoints their participation in the control ofcell proliferation and differentiation. Eicosanoids form a linkbetween different fields of research into such areas as cancer,inflammation and radiation-induced injury. This link provided theimpetus for the development of the conference series of which thepresent volume represents the proceedings of the Second InternationalConference, held in Berlin in October 1991. .

Mutations of the Three Zinc-Ligands of Leukotriene A4 Hydrolase: Effects on Zinc Content and Enzyme in aminopeptidases and neutral proteases, typified by thermolysin, revealed the presence of a putative catalytic zinc site (1, 2). Consequently, LTA. hydrolase was found, not only to contain one zinc atom per molecule, essential for the catalytic activity, but also to possess a zinc-dependent peptidase activity towards synthetic amides (3–5).
