W. Bircks,J. Ostermeyer,H. D. Schulter of biodiversity from the Amazon to the dry coastal ecosystems, caused by the reduced elevation of the northern Andes. The endemic species adapted to the dry conditions, as well as the biodiverse flora and fauna of both the desert and tropical forest, make for a unique ecosystem.

Kristin M. French,Michael E. DavisThis chapter introduces and discusses the main theories of the Andes-Amazonian geography as a continuous and influenced area from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. It pays special attention to the role the Andes play as a barrier that divides the eastern and western ecosystems and creates isolations, evolutionary processes, and speciation.

https://doi.org/10.1007/b101257The Andes ecosystems are very complex, with ecotypes and multiple endemic species. This chapter concentrates on the East Andes ecosystems, their characteristics, and their differences from the Amazonian ecosystems. Endemic forest ecosystems, agriculture ecosystems, moors, and pastures are some of the ecosystems this chapter addresses.
