After discussing different types of non-smooth systems and their characteristics and after giving the basic terminology, we present a literature survey and define the objective of the book. An outline of the succeeding chapters is given next.

Dry friction models of this type, which lead to differential inclusions, will be used in Chapter 5 to set up a mathematical formulation for mechanical multibody systems with dry friction.
