Applications of dynamic fracture mechanics for the prediction of crack arrest in engineering structng as reflected stress waves do not reach the crack tip prior to crack arrest. But, when this is not the case, it is the kinetic approach that must be used. Similarly, when inelastic effects are important, only the kinetic approach can properly admit them.

A perturbation-type approximation to the initial-boundary conditions whereby the artificial constraint of self-similarity is removed and variable velocity crack branching can be treated is discussed also. Finally, new directions and the needs of future research are identified.

,On the uniqueness of the stress intensity factor — crack velocity relationship,e crack tip, the effects of non-singular stresses, velocity, transient loading and velocity measurement is presented. These errors have obscured resolution of the uniqueness question and an experiment is described to resolve the issue.

,Mechanics of crack curving and branching — a dynamic fracture analysis,y factor, .., and a sufficient condition involving the crack curving criterion. The criteria are used to predict crack curving and crack branching in dynamic photoelastic experiments involving Homalite-100 and polycarbonate fracture specimens, as well as bursting steel and aluminum pipes.
