Oxygen Stores, discussed as three compartments; the lung, blood, and muscle. This is followed by a collation into the total available body O. stores of five basic types of divers in which there is information on natural diving to relate to the store.

Hydrodynamics, Swim Velocity and Power Requirements,y to general aspects of diving vertebrates. This is because hydrodynamic theory applies to all forms, and because there has been so little experimental work done on reptiles, birds, and mammals. Most of what is discussed below was developed from the much more extensive fish literature, as well as general hydrodynamic theory.

Aerobic Dive Limit, prediction capacity would require a considerable understanding of the physiology of the animals, particularly partitioning of O. stores and their management. The following chapter with its crude estimates indicates in a broad way the strengths and weaknesses of our present information on diving physiology and management of O. stores.

Toba-Batak—Deutsches Wörterbuchviewed recently by Penney (1987), who concluded that their remarkable diving ability is a “spin-off” of their tolerance of hibernation. As you will see through the course of the following chapter, I do not think this is quite correct; many features of diving are quite different from those of torpor.

The point of view that there is no qualitative difference and that forced submersion and diving represent a difference of degree only is an interesting and important issue. It pleads for further investigation.
