描述Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, remains one of the most fascinating and enigmatic figures in British political history. He was the romantic radical, who went on to lead the Conservative party; the urban, middle class Jew, who identified himself with a ruling elite based on the aristocracy, land and Anglicanism. This study of Disraeli seeks to provide a balanced coverage of the whole of his career, giving equal weight to the long period spent as leader of the opposition, as well as examining his rise to the Conservative leadership and his subsequent record as Prime Minister. An assessment is offered of Disraeli‘s contribution to the late-Victorian Conservative party‘s political ascendancy, and in particular to its image as the ‘national‘ party.

The Mid Victorian Conservative Party, had deprived themselves of the assistance of almost every other member of their front bench, and although Peel himself was never to hold office again — he died as a result of a riding accident in 1850 — his most talented and influential followers were to gravitate towards the Liberals in the course of the 1850s.

Between 1846 and 1865 the Conservatives were only briefly in office on two occasions, from February to December 1852, and February 1858 to June 1859, and both of these involved minority administrations which existed solely because of temporary divisions on the Liberal side. The Changing Global Environmentlled political power, with a secure parliamentary majority, for the first time, but Disraeli’s position was by no means unique. In fact, there was an obvious recent parallel in the career of Lord Palmerston, who had been a year older than Disraeli when he first became Prime Minister and yet remained
