An alternative approach to the quantization of linear relativistic field equations,nd seen to always work for nonzero mass where it leads to relativistic quantum fields. Locality has to be checked separately. For zero mass an extra condition is needed. It. appears that a linear equation for which our proposal does not work cannot be quantized at all in a Hilbert space in a relativistic way.
