,The effects of a possible change in climate on the earth’s figure,of ice and a world-wide rise of mean sea level by 1–3 m is assumed. These statements are too simple from a geodetic point of view. As the problem might be of vital importance for the next generations it is given a critical discussion.

The size of the gravity signal which gravity gradiometers have to detect is illustrated and the relationship between instrumentation accuracy versus gravity field parameter recovery accuracy is discussed. The results of a detailed simulation study, restricted to a regional recovery example, is presented.
