描述No field of contemporary biomedical science has been more revolutionized by the techniques of molecular biology than developmental biology. This is an outstanding concise introduction to developmental biology that takes a contemporary approach to describing the complex process that transforms an egg into an adult organism. The book features exceptionally clear two-color illustrations, and is designed for use in both undergraduate and graduate level courses. The book is especially noteworthy for its treatment of development in model organisms, whose contributions to developmental biology were recognized in the 1995 Nobel Prize for physiology and medicine.

Animal Morphogenesis Is Shaped Actively by Adhesion and Cell Migration, and the shape of the individual cells eventually will determine the shape of the whole association. In contrast to the development of plants, in animals active shaping through intracellular contractile filaments and forces of cohesion and adhesion are observed, and extensive displacement and migration of cells take place.

Cell Journeys: Even Germ Cells and Cells of the Peripheral Nervous System Originate from Emigrant P “layer”; instead, the mesodermal cells creep around like amoebae to colonize the spaces between the epiblast and the hypoblast (Fig. 3–39, 3–48). When the somites split up, the cells of the sclerotome and the dermatome emigrate (Fig. 3–32, 9–5). Primordial germ cells, blood cells, and neural crest cells travel particularly long distances.

Guide to Reliable Distributed Systemse neural tube, and the neural tube forms the brain and the spinal cord. Still missing are the spinal ganglia and the essential parts of the autonomous nervous system, in particular, the sympathetic system and the peripheral components of the parasympathetic system, such as the neuronal network of the gut. These parts derive from the ..
