Critical Studies of the Asia-Pacificon, deserts are zones where chemical materials/sediments may accumulate, such as tufas, nitrates, varnishes, carbonates (including spring mounds and calcrete), silcrete, and aeolianite (cemented dunes). Patterned ground phenomena are also widespread, including desiccation and salt polygons, fairy circles, heuweltjies, and gilgai.
