Die offizinellen ätherischen Öle und BalsameTalk about revolutions is easy. Revolutions are hard. On this occasion I have chosen to do the easy thing: to write about a revolution that is in the making, one that I shall call “the fourth revolution.” This obviously suggests that there were three others which preceded it, and in due course I will indicate which they were.

It rests on the complicity of its subjects, the citizens of the democracies. Emancipation from this complicity requires first of all an explicit and shared consideration of the rule of technology.

Technology and DemocracyOur society now faces an essential challenge. I will not attempt to exhaust all sides of the multifaceted debate about technology and democracy, but will instead summarize my present thinking on the topic.
