Deinstitutionalisation and the Great Sociocultural Shift to Consumer Culture in mental hospitals no longer was an appropriate cultural function. Social adjustment did not require a person to be productive. Even mentally ill people could live independently and make choices, including unwise choices, to purchase goods and services.
