The versions are contradicting and perhaps the story was shaped after a similar episode by Xerxes.

Das Politische System der Europäischen Unionon of single combats, and some literary parallelisms can be tracked down (especially from Livy). In this kind of episodes, decapitation was typically the ‘right’ closing of the story, an aspect that Curtius included as well.
