描述Data archiving has, for many years, been the most disregardedaspect of all data systems. The increase in numbers of telescopes,both groundbased and space-borne, and the increase in efficiency ofdetectors have generated overwhelming amounts of data. Much of thesedata were and are not used on short timescales and (should) have beenarchived, where they can be used later and/or by others. Archiving isessential. Objects can change in the course of time. New technologicalor scientific developments might require observing objects again. Thecost-benefit ratio will become more and more important whenconsidering the allocation of telescope time. The retrieval of `old‘data can then be crucial. .At present there are a number of data collections and data retrievalsystems. This book includes a series of clear and up-to-datedescriptions of many important available data systems. .For professional astronomers, librarians and computer engineers. .

John G. Francis,Leslie P. Francistly stored on magnetic helical scan tape and 9 track magnetic tape respectively, are being rewritten to random access optical disk. In addition, the NSSDC is in the process of ensuring that all data in its archive has a backup which is stored at a separate location.

The many faces of the Archive of the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite,fferent design philosophies have affected the organization of the archive access and support. Over the past 12 years the linking of computers through networks has had a major impact, not only on the methods used for the maintenance of the IUE Archive itself, but also on its usage and accessibility.

Data Archive Systems for the Hubble Space Telescope,n proposals is an order of magnitude lower than the total proposals. It is therefore essential for an efficient archive facility to be established to allow the world-wide astronomical community to share the tremendous scientific capabilities HST will offer.

The ESO Archive Project,term variabilities (b) to reuse data for other scientific purposes and therefore avoid the duplication of observations and (c) to allow research based on the accumulated material, . statistical studies, evolution of an object over several years, including studies on the evolution on the instruments.

Archives of the Isaac Newton Group, La Palma and Westerbork observatories,stitute an archive in this context. Addition of a suitable index or catalogue enabling an outside user to find observations by their parameters would turn the collection of tapes into a proper archive. This chapter deals with the archives of two observatories where archiving was built into the system from the start.

Database applications in Starlink,ctors, and its primary purpose remains the interactive reduction and analysis of observational data. It is managed by the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). The facilities provided divide naturally into hardware and software.
