描述.This volume’s focus on establishing a direct exchange between History and International Relations is unique in the contemporary literature on international institutions. While there have been attempts in both disciplines to engage with the other and to integrate their respective insights, a direct, focused exchange on core issues of international institutional development has rarely taken place...The volume takes this lacuna as a starting point. The structure of the volume is strictly symmetrical. In each of the four main sections, one historian and one IR scholar elaborate their views on one of four main aspects of conference diplomacy: inclusion/exclusion, effectiveness, legitimacy, and international order. This approach allows the authors to tackle the more general role of institutions in international order in a long-term historical perspective. The diagnosed crisis of contemporary, liberal order appears in a different light when viewed before the background of continuity and change in the past 200 years. This book has the potential to become essential reading for scholars and practitioners alike..

The Effectiveness of Conference Diplomacypation. Comparing the Congress of Vienna and early twentieth-century G7 meetings, it draws attention to three trends: the dramatic decline in the time available for direct negotiation; the continued importance of political sociability as a key feature of summits; and the increasing distance between

The Legitimacy of Conference Diplomacy: A Historian’s Viewte to an agenda set by International Relations specialists with their own systematic and generalizing perspectives? The Problem of International Order at the Versailles Conference and Aftert one end we have the aristocratic sophistication of the Congress of Vienna. At the other end we have the density and technical complexity of modern conference diplomacy. In between there is the nadir of Versailles. Along this trajectory it is commonplace to draw unfavorable contrasts, for instance,

The Dynamics of International Orderve break from the past. Earlier statesmen, political observers, and commenters had an understanding of the ‘balance of power’ and invoked it to describe the bloody politics of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, but participants at the Vienna Congress reimagined the term, and reinvented its ru

Conference Diplomacy and the Future of International Ordertions. The format itself is contested, to say the least. Without it, however, even modest steps toward stability and peace remain inconceivable. The volume assembles contributions devoted to key issues of what makes conference diplomacy successful and acceptable. Each of these issues—the question of
