描述Scientific output in low- and middle-income countries is greatly challenged by numerous factors. This is particularly pronounced in sub-Saharan African countries, despite the continent being the world’s second largest and second most-populous continent, currently undergoing rapid economic growth. Financial constraints and unclear areas of focus when funding is available, are among the limiting factors, with the consequence being the development of inadequate policies, especially those relating to environmental protection and conservation..This 13-chapter book is a unique piece in the field of microbiology, designed to stimulate some research areas in Africa by illustrating interesting and informative examples of the current applied research agenda in environmental microbiology in selected countries within the continent. With authors from the North, South, East and West of Africa, the book touches diverse applied methods and approaches to meet the pragmatic needs faced by environmental microbiologists in Africa. Also included are topics on viruses, bacteria (including cyanobacteria), and protozoa, and their importance in disease. Sustainable agriculture and aquaculture, and eco-frie

Emerging and Reemerging Bacterial Pathogens of Humans in Environmental and Hospital Settings,in many African countries, influenced by socioeconomic, environmental/ecological, pathogen (evolution and the development of drug resistance), and human factors. In Africa, prevention and control strategies for these emerging pathogens are hampered by inequalities in necessary infrastructure (waste

Microbiological Air Quality in Different Indoor and Outdoor Settings in Africa and Beyond: Challengystems into the atmosphere (Peter 2014; Saramanda et al. 2016). Bioaerosols are generally ubiquitous in the environment and due to their small particle size (<2.5 μm) are easily dispersed in the air. Those aerosols created at the surface of aquatic systems are known to concentrate and carry microbes

Antibiotics Use in African Aquaculture: Their Potential Risks on Fish and Human Health, and vegetables together with antibiotics residues in the aquatic environment have led to an increase in the prevalence of ARB and ARGs, posing a human health risk in various African countries. Limited studies indicate higher residues of antibiotics in cultured fish, which exceed the maximum limits s
