描述 | In the 100 years since the legume-Rhizobium symbioticnitrogen fixation interaction was first described, interest in thisfield has grown rapidly. The types of studies have been cyclical innature, involving a cross-section of disciplines. The availability ofcheap nitrogenous fertilizers caused much of the biological nitrogenfixation research to become more theoretical in the developed world. The high cost of energy, coupled with environmental concerns and theinterest in sustainable agriculture, has stimulated research insymbiotic nitrogen fixation. The development of modern genetictechniques has resulted in interdisciplinary research onplant-microbe interactions controlling nitrogen fixation. Thishas resulted in a better understanding of environmental factorsinfluencing the nodulation process, chemical signalling between thesymbiotic partners and the nature of the specificity between hostplant and microsymbiotant. .This volume summarizes the diverse research efforts in biologicalnitrogen fixation by presenting a collection of papers in the areas ofphysiology and metabolism, taxonomy and evolution, genetics andecology. |
