Random Crystal Field Effects in Amorphous Rare-Earth Alloysate is unstable: new Monte Carlo simulation data however sheds additional light on this controversial result. We also discuss recent attempts to probe the randomness of the crystal field distribution using both Mössbauer and neutron scattering techniques, and conclude that the model remains an effective parameterization of real materials.

Sara Charlesworth,Fiona Macdonalde used to explain the quantitative magnitude of the crystal field parameters if one allowed two electronic charges to be relocated from the rare-earth to pnictide or chalcogenide site. This transfer of charge has some qualitative support based upon electronegativity arguments.
