Resolution Characteristics of Computerized Tomography and their Impact on Quantitative Brain Diagnosby its density and spatial resolution. Routine diagnosis is mainly based on a qualitative evaluation of image morphology. Aquantitative analysisis, however, sometimes needed and can be accomplished, if the system’ stransmission features are considered.

Image Artefacts in Computerized Tomographyanners of the first generation-such as the EMI brain scanner with the 160x160 picture matrix-quite frequently present various typical image artefacts. These artefacts may considerably degrade the information content of a tomogram. They may even occasionally falsify image morphology to an extent which bears the risk of wrong diagnosis.

Results of Computerized Axial Tomography with Infratentorial Tumorsctures impair the quality of CT scans in the cerebellar and pontine region, but on the other hand the percentage of tumors with brain density is extremely high. In the present study of 196 tumors in the posterior fossa, 50 (25.5%) were isodense in the plain scan compared with only 15% in our overall tumor series (see Table 1).
