The paper describes work which we have been conducting in the context of an ESPRIT project (P2576 ACKnowledgc), and whose aim is to ameliorate some of the problems identified.

Knowledge acquisition from cases,omponents: context, task, solution trace, solution and evaluation of the solution. The knowledge engineer builds a formalization sequence of case descriptions. An attribute/value description is considered to be formal. The data structure is derived from Memory Organization Packages. The sequence itself documents the formalization process.

Shifting positions: Moving from a cognitive science point of view to a knowledge engineering stanceone for example through a description of a method of problem-solving. The remainder of the paper gives a more detailed account of the motives (outside the actual experiences with KRITON) that lead to these conclusions. After outlining several requirements, we delineate the role of cognitive science research in our current approach.
