The law and industrial relations,t between equals and one which is freely entered into. In fact, the individual employee is almost invariably in a weaker position than the employer. Hence the need and right for individuals to be able to organise in free and effective trade unions and the need for protective legislation in some areas.

Trade unions,e with Government and in society generally, and greatly reduced bargaining power . employers. The environment in which unions had to operate was the crucial cause of their problems, although this is not to say that there were not deficiencies in union organisation, policies and behaviour which contributed.
