Genetic variation and fitness: Conservation lessons from piness are well documented in this and other species of conifers. Most species carry large numbers of embryonic lethal equivalents. Further, in later life stages may more deleterious recessives influence growth, survival, and reproduction. The implications of the genetic load for conservation and breeding are discussed.

Introductory remarkse or growth parameters, and with only a few models of subdivision-migration. The chapters in this part remind us of the need for further and more careful developments of this theory. At least three different lines of thought should be mentioned here.

The genetic structure of metapopulations and conservation biologyided and some examples are given. The expectation that any general theory, such as that of metapopulations, can make useful predictions for particular problems of conservation is examined and compared with the prevailing ‘state of the art’ recommendations.
