描述 | In .Consequentialism Reconsidered., Carlson strives to finda plausible formulation of the structural part of consequentialism.Key notions are analyzed, such as outcomes, alternatives andperformability. Carlson argues that consequentialism should beunderstood as a maximizing rather than a satisficing theory, and astemporally neutral rather than future oriented. He also shows thatcertain moral theories cannot be reformulated as consequentialisttheories. .The relevant alternatives for an agent in a situation are taken tocomprise all actions that they can perform in the situation. Thedefense of this idea necessitates certain modifications to thestandard consequentialist criteria of obligatoriness, rightness andwrongness. The problem of whether agents should adapt their actions totheir own future actions is also addressed. Further, a conditionalanalysis of performability is suggested, and it is argued thatparticular actions should in this connection be regarded as `abstract‘rather than `concrete‘. The final chapter sketches a consequentialisttheory for collective agents. . |
