LIVING WITH THE NEIGHBOURS,egular supply of familiar game to hunt. By the end of the 19. century, the descendants of those rabbits numbered in the tens of millions. Infesting an area nearly the size of Europe, they devastated crops and turned entire regions into wasteland. In the process, they drove many of their marsupial competitors to the brink of extinction.

1572-7742 he general reader unlike other accounts of this areaInteractions matter. To understand the distributions of plants and animals in a landscape you need to understand how they interact with each other, and with their environment. The resulting networks of interactions make ecosystems highly complex. R

Analysis of Similarity and Preference Data,of dry meadows that are found on many of the islands.. For the most part, the butterflies on each island form a distinct population. About 60-80% of the butterflies spend their entire lives on the island where they are born. So the butterflies living on each island are almost isolated from the rest of the species.

VIRTUAL WORLDS,g questions deal with processes that occur on massive time and spatial scales. Without a time machine, we cannot directly test our ideas about them empirically. The same problem is faced in other fields of research, from astronomy and geophysics to archaeology and palaeontology.

THE GLOBAL PICTURE,t all, it teaches that we cannot understand ecosystems by studying them in isolation. To get the full picture, we need to set each ecosystem in the context of its surrounding region. Nor can we understand an entire region without understanding how the elements in its ecological mosaic interact with one another.
