描述This volume considers the role comets may have played in the origins and evolution of life, particularly in light of recent investigations of Halley‘s comet, of new insights into organic synthesis in meteorites and comets, and of new results of numerical simulations of cometary orbits and impacts on Earth. The book is intended as a comprehensive review of current research, accessible to graduate students and others new to the field. Each chapter was prepared by an expert to give an overview of an aspect of the field, and carefully revised by the editors for uniformity in style and presentation.

Marina Fischer-Kowalski,Helga Weisz particular challenge for comet missions is a rendezvous with a new comet as it enters the planetary region for the first time. The planned Rosetta mission with the surface landers Champollion and Roland promise to greatly expand our knowledge of comets.

Comets as a Source of Prebiotic Organic Molecules for the Early Earth, thesizing them in impacts. In an early carbon dioxide-rich terrestrial atmosphere, these mechanisms would have quantitatively rivaled or exceeded terrestrial organic synthesis in situ. In an early reducing (methane-rich) atmosphere, the exogenous sources would have been quantitatively unimportant compared to atmospheric production.

Introduction: Comets and the Origin of Life, ory of our planet. There is still much to learn, despite recent progress in our knowledge of such fundamental issues as the nature of organic chemical processes in space, the chemistry of comets and asteroids and the nature of the early terrestrial environment.

26Al and Liquid Water Environments in Comets, uction through the ice, and heat carried by the flow of gas through the porous nucleus. The most recent models show that conditions for producing liquid water can be achieved only under rather contrived circumstances.
